Professor Osama Al-Khatib... A global pioneer in robotics research and engineering

Professor Osama Al-Khatib, from Aleppo, Syria, heads the International Organization for Robotics Research (IFRR ) and is a global pioneer in robotics research and engineering. His research focuses on robotic systems, robotic motion control, and tactile interaction. Professor Khatib’s early research laid the foundations for current advanced designs for humanoid robots. His PhD thesis at the École Nationale Supérieure des Sciences Aéronautiques et Astronautiques in France focused on automatic control engineering, after obtaining his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Montpellier in France.

Khatib, who directs the Robotic Systems Laboratory, is a Stanford University professor of computer science and an IEEE Fellow who has developed theories, algorithms, and techniques that control complex robotic systems by modeling their mechanical motion so that they can interact with their surroundings in real time.

Khatib developed the concept of interactive control of humanoid robots, which relies on monitoring the operating environment to facilitate the movement of its entire structure and control its capabilities and interactions.

Professor Osama Khatib created the human-like robot “Ocean 1” to explore the depths of the oceans, taking advantage of the innovations of touch sensors, working underwater, enhancing human-robot interaction, and integrating marine sciences and underwater engineering activities.

He also led the Ocean One Kai expedition, which featured the latest generation of underwater humanoid robots designed to explore the deep sea with dual-hand control, stereoscopic vision and human-robot tactile interaction capabilities.

Pioneer of interactive robotics

Professor Khatib’s innovations have contributed to enhancing the capabilities of autonomous robots to perform tasks in operational space exploration, underwater robotics, and human-robot collaboration.

Khatib is currently the Director of the Robotics Laboratory at Stanford University and President of the International Robotics Research Foundation. His research in robotics focuses on novel control structures, algorithms, sensing, and programming for service robots.

Professor Osama Khatib has published more than 327 research papers in the field of robotics, and has accomplished a number of pioneering innovations related to the motor behavior of robots and linking them to human body movement, and robot control software using advanced technologies. Professor Osama Khatib’s research is a reliable reference for robotics researchers, workers in robotics-related specializations, and those interested in this technological sector.

"Arab Geniuses"... enhances Arab scientific, cognitive and intellectual progress

The Arab Genius Award, launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, “may God protect him,” puts the brightest minds in the Arab world in the spotlight and celebrates them and their positive impact on the journey of humanity. The award reflects His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s support for innovation and scientific, cognitive, cultural and intellectual progress in the Arab world .

Her Excellency Sarah Al Amiri, Minister of Education in the United Arab Emirates, chairs the committee specialized in the engineering and technology category of the “Arab Geniuses” initiative, and its members include Dr. Arif Sultan Al Hammadi, Dr. Mohammed Qassim, Dean of the Dubai Future Academy, Professor Ismail Al Hanati, Director of Al Hussein Technical University, and Adel Darwish, Regional Director of the International Telecommunication Union .

The Arab Geniuses initiative works to highlight the inspiring achievements of brilliant Arab minds and to introduce their impact on the path of development and human civilization in order to expand it and motivate more Arab youth and emerging Arab talents to follow in the footsteps of distinguished Arab geniuses.

For the second year in a row, the largest award of its kind in the Arab world continued to record a qualitative turnout and a large volume of nomination requests from individuals and institutions for scientific, intellectual and creative figures who have become role models for young Arab cadres to persevere and dedicate themselves to enhancing the Arab role in the human cultural and intellectual heritage.
