Creator of OceanOne humanoid robot pledges further support for ocean conservation
Dubai: Renowned Syrian robotics innovator Professor Oussama Khatib, Director of the Robotics Laboratory at Stanford University, US, has announced that he will donate his Dh1 million prize from the Great Arab Minds Award that he won in Dubai on Thursday, to support ocean conservation.
In an interview with Gulf News after the award ceremony, Prof Khatib, known for creating the OceanOne humanoid robot for deep-sea exploration, highlighted the importance of oceans, calling them the lifeblood of the planet. “If we neglect them, we risk losing life on Earth,” he said.
The award was presented to Prof Khatib and five other Dh1 million winners by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
Robotarium wish
Prof Khatib praised the UAE’s support for science and technology and revealed his wish to establish a robotarium in Dubai’s Museum of the Future, where the award ceremony was held.
A place for developing and showcasing robotics technology, he envisions it as a space where children can interact with technology, helping inspire the next generation of scientists.
“I am grateful for this award from Sheikh Mohammed. I have never received such support from the Arab world,” Prof Khatib said. He stressed the importance of creating an enabling environment for Arab scientists, noting that many talented students lack opportunities.
With over 327 research studies, he continues to inspire hope for a scientific renaissance in the Arab world.
Reflecting on his roots, Prof Khatib expressed a deep connection to Syria. “My heart has never left Syria. I dream of a future where Arab researchers have the chance to thrive and contribute to global progress, just as we did in the past.”
